The five year period which Graham Sutherland (1903-1980) spent working for the British Government as an Official War Artist is a little known episode in his long artistic career. The one hundred and fifty wartime drawings illustrated in this book, together with a number of preliminary sketches, represent a selection made by Sutherland himself from a much larger body of work. The book includes a perceptive introductory essay by Roberto Tassi entitled "A Descent into the Inferno".
