This catalogue was produced to accompany the exhibition of work by Alfred Wallis (1855-1942) and James Dixon (1887-1970) held at the Irish Museum of Modern Art from 1 September to 21 November 1999 which then toured to Tate St.Ives from May-November 2000. Both artists were originally fishermen who came to painting late in life, James Dixon from Tory Island of the north coast of Co.Donegal in Ireland and Alfred Wallis from Cornwall respectively. Their close association with the sea and their shared lack of formal art training has led to comparisons between the two and this exhibition was the first to bring their work together.
