This catalogue was published to accompany the exhibition of work by the American artist Winslow Homer (1836-1910) held at the Northern Centre for Contemporary Art, Sunderland in 1988. (At the time of publication, this was the largest exhibition of Homer's work ever to be held outside America). Homer spent two years (1881-1882) in the English coastal village of Cullercoats, Tyne and Wear. Many of the paintings at Cullercoats took as their subjects working men and women and their daily heroism, imbued with a solidity and sobriety which was new to Homer's art, presaging the direction of his future work.
