This catalogue was produced to accompany the exhibition of portraits held at the Holburne Museum of Art, Bath from 25th June to 15th September 2002. The exhibition explored the practice of portraiture in Bath, looking at the reasons why over a hundred and fifty artists worked in the city between 1700 and 1800 and why some flourished while others (notably Joseph Wright of Derby) floundered. It examines the ways artists worked, where they lived and how they presented themselves to the public.
